Julie Petr chats with Therese Niemiec from Little Wishes Foundation about starting and growing a non-profit organization that grants wishes for children with cancer.

 

Little Wish Foundation

  • Granting wishes in the $500-$1000 range to children battling cancer
  • Started by Therese’s daughter Liz when she was 16
  • Has currently granted 950 wishes
  • Operating in 13 hospitals in 7 states, with a goal to grow nationwide

 

Advice to Someone Wanting to Start a Non-Profit Organization

  • Ask questions and learn from people that have started other non-profits
  • Hire a good non-profit accountant
  • Put together a strong board of directors for guidance and leadership

 

Managing the Time Commitment of Running a Non-Profit Organization

  • It’s easy to put in the hours when you see the results and how it touches families
  • Her life felt complete after she started helping others
  • Believes that if you are able to help someone else, you should do so in some capacity
  • Therese is inspired by the time management skills of her own mother

WFYI CFO Connie Campbell joins Julie Petr for February's Monthly Mentoring Chat

 

Guest Bio

Connie Fraley Campbell serves as Chief Financial Officer for WFYI Public Media.  In this role, Connie provides leadership and direction of all strategic financial operations.  This includes budgeting, financial reporting, and compliance.

Connie joined WFYI in 2016 with more than 30 years of experience in management, finance and accounting functions as well as more than a decade of legal and operational experience within non-profit and for-profit institutions.  She has served as a practicing attorney and a practicing CPA.

Her career experience has included success at Bosma Enterprises, and most recently at the Liberty Mutual Insurance Group.

Connie received her JD from the University of Kentucky College of Law, and her BS in Accounting with High Distinction also from the University of Kentucky. She and her husband live in Indianapolis.

 

Combating the Glass Ceiling
